The real ‘Event Horizon’

I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. (Revelation 22: 13)

NASA the American space agency describes an ‘Event Horizon’ as what makes the heart of a Black Hole be black in Outer Space. That’s a simplistic explanation. Nothing can escape the reach of this phenomenon, where the gravity is so immense that the required escape velocity is faster than light itself. NASA explains, “whatever passes into the event horizon is doomed to stay inside it – even light. Because light can’t escape, black holes themselves neither emit nor reflect it, and nothing about what happens within them can reach an outside observer.”

It’s a deep mystery, then. We just don’t know and can only marvel at this terrible force majeure, which absorbs everything and extracts matter into its heart, beyond our sight and beyond our understanding. Even so, we are still only talking about creation despite its titanic potency. Imagine then, the ‘pull’ in the heart of God the Creator. The power involved. Jesus Christ, through the Holy Spirit, invites us into the real ‘Event Horizon’, so to speak, where love is so unconditional and so real, it’s a deeper mystery than that offered by black holes and the sublime machinations of the galaxies.

The condition of the promise offered through the gospel is simply that we need to turn to Him in our hearts. Then He draws us away from the debris and detriment of our lives – over our entire lifetimes – and into the core of love personified, love unconditional; where grace is the atmosphere and kindness is the air we breathe.

Yes, it’s a journey but if you believe in the Lord (and it’s never too late to begin) – you have started the gravitational pull to the place of inversion where light is faster than darkness, where death is abolished (2 Timothy 1:10) and where eternity tumbles like a gushing waterfall towards a horizon where peace abides and the Lord rules in all his majesty.

I think the Scottish poet Hugh Macdiarmid had a sense of this, and I am remembering these lines from my university days 30 years ago: “But let my soul increase in me, God dwarfed to enter my puir thocht Expand to his true size again, And protoplasm’s look befit The nature o’ its destiny, And seed and sequence be nae mair Incongruous to ane anither.”
