Trusting God within the mystery of matters

It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; but the glory of kings is to search out a matter. (Proverbs 25:2)

Sometimes I can sit, having a ‘quiet time’ and start thinking about private matters from the past or issues in the present, for which I have no answer. I find myself wondering why God doesn’t pose easy answers immediately. However, this morning I was drawn to this Proverb and it reminded me that the Lord can lead us on journeys of discovery rather than short cuts to definitive conclusions on personal events, which have affected us. It is His glory to hide a matter in accordance with His holy prerogative and will. It is our glory as children of God, ‘kings’ in that respect, to walk with Him in searching and discovering what He wants to show us – in an attitude of joy and thankfulness because that’s the appropriate manner to approach such matters.

We don’t have the answers to questions and conundrums we may have, on this side of life, even if we still feel pain from them. But the most important things still stand – the calling to simply know we are loved by God as his children, free to live in the true liberty found in relationship with Him. Free to ‘agape’ love others in turn, and to trust Him for everything else. He has all the answers and there is the greatest reassurance in that.

It’s a true privilege to come before God and to surrender these matters to Him. Lay it all before Him and just say, ‘I don’t understand but you do. And I choose to trust you.’ That’s what Joseph did when the brothers he loved threw him into a dark pit. That’s what David did when he was anointed as king but had to flee from Saul, weeping after Jonathan tearfully told him of his father’s desire to kill him. That’s what Samson did as he leant, blinded, against the pillars of a temple and whispered for strength one last time. We are not alone in these things, others have walked the path of faith before us and we can take inspiration and encouragement from their example.
