Passing The Torch

Praise the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens (Psalm 150:1)

_

So I was sitting in my lounge recently listening to various rock worship songs from 20 to 30 years ago. Remembering the Delirious? concerts and the excitement of 24/7 prayer when it began and that sense of revival, which was so thrilling in those days. There I was hearing the praising of the past: a tired, middle-aged man loving God but rather weary because of life stuff.

Suddenly my little boy appears out of nowhere and starts jumping up and down to the music, doing guitar-playing impressions in front of me. I fix my gaze steadily at him as he moves around, hopping on both feet and he looks back at me, roaring with laughter as he copies the words of the songs to Jesus in his own way. He sings it out. He looks so full of joy.

And then I see it – that old call for revival never died. Perhaps it grew cold in our church culture in the intervening years. Perhaps I thought it was a dream of yesteryear. But my boy is laughing and dancing to these old worship songs, just as I used to. The torch has passed on and now a new Mr Eyte is on the scene thanking Jesus for his love.

A couple of nights later, my younger daughter wakes to a nightmare. She tells me she tried praying. Meanwhile my older daughter has learnt John 3:16 off by heart: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

These kids are taking flight in the Holy Spirit. They may be little moments but the next generation is rising to the call of God to marvel at his holiness. The vision to be all-in, walking upstream and following Jesus Christ has never died.
